About the difficult military service of young border guards. The action takes place on the northern borders, on a distant island, where young soldiers, led by a sergeant, serve at a technical observation post: day and night, they "feel" with a searchlight beam and waves of a radar station in the assigned area. The "pood of salt" had to be eaten together by the soldiers before they realized how close their border was.
