The action begins in Moscow on July 3, 1941.Boris Borozdin, despite the reservation, goes to the front as a volunteer: "If I'm honest, I have to," he leaves on the eve of the birthday of his fiancee Veronika, whom he calls Squirrel. Boris goes missing at the front - Veronika, having lost her parents and shelter, marries Boris's cousin Mark out of desperation, but this marriage does not become a consolation for her. While some are fighting at the front or operating on the wounded around the clock, like Boris's father, Dr. Borozdin and his daughter, Irina, others manage to cash in on the common misfortune.
